The “Magna Graecia” Foundation (UMG Foundation, acronym UMGF) was born in January 2011 inside the “Magna Graecia” University of Catanzaro (http://www.unicz.it/t ) thanks to a national law (art. 59 comma 3 legge 23/12/2000, n.388) which gave the opportunity to create private entities able to provide teachers, students and researchers services and support Universities in terms of teaching improvement, research, innovation and internationalization.
The Foundation is officially the private-public institution which contributes to the development of the University of Catanzaro and of its the socio-economical-cultural contest. Its mission is furthermore to be the mirror between the University and the territory which is, in specific the city of Catanzaro, but in a wider perspective the Calabria region, the Italian Nation in the European context and in the world. Through its “youth” structure, the UMGF aims at recollecting target needs and raise awareness on the great, but under-estimated cultural, social and scientific heritage at local level towards a process of innovation and development.
The Foundation places side by side to the University but, more in general, wants to be a point of reference in the Educational field for the local context, trying to foster quality and improvement of research in order to become the practical connection among several institutions from the public and the private sector. Thanks to a good coordination and an assured level of autonomy, the Foundation could implement internal strategies and indipendent projects useful for the involvement of researchers, students and lectures in several activities, trainings, events assuring an interactive and dynamic dialogue between the University and other actors of the educational and research field. The Foundation is also opening the dialogue with the social and economical parts of our society aiming at creating a bridge between the educational sector and the labour market.
The Southern territory of Calabria region offers beautiful landscapes and holidays places but also a difficult panorama of diseases, disadvantaged situations and lack of opportunities. The Foundation aims at becoming also a point of contact and service provider for adult and young people in Europe offering them information and training on European Studies and European Citizenship Education. In Italy these topics are still an unknown context of work to develop together with international partners.
